Start With the End in Mind

TRAVEL IN TIME! Think ahead 5 years from today…now 10 years. Where are you? What are you doing? How did you get there? Do you enjoy it?

A lot of the answers to these questions will be determined by what you do TODAY! The skills you gain, the habits you form, the relationships you foster, the knowledge you gain, the humility you cultivate…your faith. All these things among others will shape you and your life into what it will be a few years from now. With this in mind, how intentional do you want to be about how you spend your time today? Not everything is within our control, thankfully! But we are to be stewards of those things that are within our control today, in this very moment.

ENACTUS is a great way to spend your time, sharpen your skills, develop relationships and habits that will open many doors for you and allow you to grow personally and professionally. Personally, I can trace a lot of my career opportunities to experiences with ENACTUS while I was a student at JBU. If you contrast your experiences in the classroom and your experiences at ENACTUS, they look very differently. The classroom is a good place to learn some things, but applying those lessons teaches you different things and broadens your experience. This fact alone is exciting because you know that you are getting a broader experience during your time in college, an experience beyond what the majority of students get by just learning in the classroom. Once out of college and in in a workplace environment, the majority of people have to find their own resources, build a plan and execute…sound familiar? These are skills you have the opportunity to learn at ENACTUS if you put your mind to it. Make your time at ENACTUS and at JBU count!

An approach that I recommend is “start with the end in mind”. As you start a journey, build a plan or think about life…where do you want to be? What are the goals you want to achieve? Who do you want to achieve them with? What is the purpose behind those goals and who do they serve? Once you have a vision, build a plan that helps you get there! If you want to be stronger, it will take some time at the gym; if you want to be a good writer, it will take some practice; a good musician will require hours and days of rehearsals….start today to see the fruits tomorrow! There is an old Japanese saying that goes: “The best time to plant an apple tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today.”

Life will take many turns and many plans will fall by the side. Even the best laid plans will teach us flexibility by having to change in midstream and adapt to new conditions. An important thought to keep in mind is that we did the best we could with what was given to us, today.   And the most important factor is to know WHO you are doing it all for, because that “who” will become your master. Make sure that “who” is bigger than yourself.

Look at your time at ENACTUS with purpose and make it count!
